Social Science Day 2015 - A report
Social Science Club of Aditya Birla World Academy had organized Social Science Day on Friday, October 20, 2015. Workshops, seminars, a variety of competitions were held to celebrate the day. MrAkeel Master kicked off the day with an interactive talk with grades 9 and 11 students. He focused on Present Global Economy and its interactions. MrAkeel Master, an alumnus of Mumbai University in Economics , he is a chartered accountant, working with KPMG India and a partner at “BSR and Company LLP” with 20 years of experience in auditing and accounting. Mr Master started off providing a concise, yet informative overview of the present global economy and its interactions between countries. His entire explanation revolved around the term VUCA- volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity which he demonstrated through the cyclically inter-related issues affecting the economy; ISIS, the European migrant situation, and fluctuating oil prices. Stressing on the importance of nations and firms to adapt to technological/market-demand change, Mr Master used the example of Europe-its ageing population, stagnant growth to compare with the low interest, 3% annual growth of USA to suggest solutions towards economic revival like improved infrastructure, low interest and increased ease of doing business. |

Using his experience, Mr Master also grasped this opportunity to confer his “ secrets of lifes success”. Among others were Passion, Self Confidence, Knowing one’s own skills , shouldering responsibility, Winning mentality and a lack of fear of failure.
Followed by this, there was a Business Concept Competition for Young Entrepreneurs. This was designed to recognize and promote exceptional entrepreneurial skill and creativity among the grade 11 students of Cambridge and IB programmer.
The Business Concept Competition was a very inspiring activity for all students. Brainstorming over ideas, analyzing different business situations, market conditions, finance available, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats and PEST conditions of the country helped us think like entrepreneurs. In total there were 8 teams who submitted their innovative ideas to the panel and after a difficult selection process, 6 teams were chosen to present their business concept to the audience on social sciences day.
All of the teams presented extremely innovative and creative ideas, such as a Food Maker, iHelp, a website for hiring domestic help, Vitter, a social networking site with a voice feature, WISHs, a smart shoe and many more. We were then asked challenging questions by the judges as well as the audience, which we had to answer in an efficient way and live up to the expectations. This activity gave all 11th graders the wonderful opportunity to experience the life of an entrepreneur.
At the end all of us learnt great ideas that could change the way of living someday and all the students thrived in presenting.
Our 2nd guest speaker of the day was Mr Vishal Madia. He has worked at Ernst & Young in their Business Advisory Services as a Senior consultant, and later worked at Edelweiss where he was originally a part of the Corporate planning and Strategy team, and consequently became involved in setting up and managing multi asset class corporate treasury function for the Edelweiss Group. Having worked in the field of finance for over 10 years, he had developed deep knowledge and understanding of the subject, particularly about how financial services worked in the professional world. The session began with a heart-warming introduction, after which Mr. Madia shared with us information regarding finance and financial services, which went beyond textbook knowledge. He spoke to us about the important traits that business look at while hiring employees and also shared his personal experiences with us, which fascinated the students and staff alike. His endeavors seemed to have motivated and encouraged students, and the session concluded with a loud applause by the audience.
The day was ended with Social Science assembly where winners of the various competitions were honoured by the faculty members. In the jam packed school auditorium, the students of graded 6 to 12 and staff members witnessed students’ presentations, dances and quiz show.
